The handpan is one of the newest and most enchanting instruments in the world of sound healing and meditation. Inspired by traditional Caribbean steelpan and ancient percussion instruments from Asia and the Middle East, the very first handpan — known as the Hang — was created in Switzerland in the year 2000. Since then, handpans have become beloved for their celestial tones, deep harmonics, and the sense of calm they bring to anyone who plays or listens.
Each handpan is a work of art — handcrafted, shaped, and tuned to create a rich, resonant sound that seems to float through the air. The central dome, called the Ding, produces the root note, while the surrounding tone fields create a balanced and harmonious scale. Played with the hands, the instrument responds with warmth, sensitivity, and emotional expression.

Handpans vs. Steel Tongue Drums — What’s the Difference?
These two beautiful instruments are often confused, so here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right one for your sound journey:
- Handpans are played with the hands, offering rich harmonics, soothing resonance, and an immersive, meditative sound experience.
- Steel Tongue Drums have cut “tongues” in the metal and are usually played with mallets or fingertips. Their tones are brighter, simpler, and more percussive.
Both instruments are wonderful for sound healing, mindfulness, and creative expression — they just have different voices and playing styles.
Note: It’s recommended to play your handpan with only your fingers. If you choose to use the mallets, use them extremely gently so you do not dent the handpan or make it go out of tune.
